Five Questions to Ask Before Booking a River Cruise

Not all river voyages are alike. Here's how to find the one that truly suits the way you travel.

River cruising is one of the most relaxed ways to see a region — small ships, a new town each day and only one unpack. But the right voyage depends on a few details that brochures rarely make clear.
1. How large is the ship?
Smaller ships mean fewer guests, quieter decks and a more personal level of service. Ask how many passengers are on board, not just the number of cabins.
2. What is really included?
Some lines include drinks, excursions, gratuities and transfers; others charge for each. Comparing the true total often changes which voyage offers the best value.
3. Which cabin is right for you?
A suite with a full balcony is a very different experience from a cabin with a window at the waterline. If you'll spend time on board, the cabin is worth the investment.
4. How long are you in port?
Look for itineraries with evening departures or overnight stays, so you can enjoy dinner ashore or a concert in town.
5. When is the best time to sail?
Spring and early autumn are beautiful in Europe, with milder weather and fewer crowds; December brings the Christmas markets. Water levels can affect sailings, so a good adviser will help you weigh the options.
I'm always happy to compare voyages side by side — it's one of my favourite parts of planning.
