A travel advisor's guide to Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay: island-themed suites, dining, what's included and how to explore the Cape Peninsula.

Escaping the city and heading south of Cape Town is a must on any visit to the Cape. Within minutes you're on one of the most beautiful coastal drives I know, and at the end of it, tucked into a cove below Chapman's Peak, is Tintswalo Atlantic.

Tintswalo Atlantic, Hout Bay

It was an online photo that first made me fall for this place: waves rolling onto a pebble beach, an orange and pink sky as the sun set over The Sentinel, and a pod chair hanging from a private balcony. When I stayed, I watched that exact sunset from my own balcony and could barely tell the difference between my photos and the one that had caught my eye. It really is as lovely as the pictures suggest.

Sadly, only a few weeks after my stay, a fire burnt down a large part of the lodge. It has since been rebuilt, and while I haven't been back myself, we've had guests stay since who tell us it was every bit as magical as my stay.

Here's what I loved, what has changed since my stay, and what you need to know if you're thinking of booking.

Where Tintswalo Atlantic is

Tintswalo Atlantic sits on Chapman's Peak Drive, just past Hout Bay, within Table Mountain National Park. You can't see the lodge from the road. You leave your car at the entrance and car park off Chapman's Peak Drive, and a shuttle takes you down a winding track to the water's edge. The buildings only come into view as you get close, tucked between the hills and small inlets of the bay. From the moment you arrive it feels a world away from busy Cape Town, even though the city is under an hour away.

The lodge is on the right just before the Chapman's Peak toll gate, coming from Hout Bay. The hotel puts it at roughly 50 minutes from Cape Town International Airport and just over 40 minutes from the V&A Waterfront, traffic permitting.

The drive from Cape Town

Getting there is half the fun. The route south along the Atlantic Seaboard takes you through Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, with mountains and cliffs on your left and the Atlantic on your right. The hardest part is limiting the photo stops so you arrive at a decent hour.

My suggestion is to make a day of it. I stopped at Camps Bay for a fresh seafood lunch and a walk along the beach, then spent the afternoon at the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay before checking in. The market is still going and currently opens Friday to Sunday, with Friday evening trading if you'd like to catch some live music.

The suites

Each suite at Tintswalo Atlantic is themed around an island somewhere in the world. Think the bright blues of Zanzibar, classic Italian style in Sicily and my favourite, Antigua, where I stayed, with its fresh Caribbean colours and furnishings. I was pleased to see it is still on the list.

Today there are 10 suites, and every one looks out over the Atlantic. Eight are Island Suites right at the water's edge (including Antigua, Zanzibar, Sicily, Ithaca, Lamu, Robben Island, Cousine Island and Saint Marie). The other two, Elba and Corsica, are Mountain Suites, set a little higher and further back from the water, with ocean views and wood-burning fireplaces. If you want the waves right below your balcony, ask for a water's edge Island Suite.

The suites are designed for both seasons. In summer you'll spend your time on the balcony or by the heated pool looking straight out over the Atlantic. In winter you can watch the sunset through floor-to-ceiling glass doors, curled up in front of your own fireplace or in a bubble bath as the light fades.

Food and drink

The food at Tintswalo was a highlight of a trip that was already full of good meals in South Africa. The kitchen focused on fresh, local, sustainable produce, and I ate more than enough during my stay.

My evening started with canapés on the balcony and a gin and tonic in hand while the sun went down. That sunset ritual is still part of the stay: breakfast and sunset canapés with a cocktail are included in the rate. Dinner during my visit was a five-course meal by candlelight, finished with a cocktail in the lounge. Breakfast only nine hours later was four courses, with platter after platter of cold meats, cheeses, fresh fruit and muesli, followed by a hot menu I couldn't even contemplate.

One thing worth knowing now: lunch and dinner on site are served by Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo Atlantic, which opened in 2020 as part of Liam Tomlin's well-regarded Chefs Warehouse group. It's built around a menu of small plates to share, with a strong seafood focus, and it's open to outside diners too, so reservations are essential. Lunch and dinner are not included in the room rate, so book your table when you book your suite.

On the day, I skipped lunch altogether and had a cocktail and a fresh fruit platter on my balcony. I'd recommend it.

How to spend your days

You may struggle to leave your balcony, but the lodge is a great base for exploring the Cape Peninsula. I self-drove, and if you err on the side of safety it can be a great experience. The freedom to explore the coastline, visit the local markets and stop for photos along the way made it worth it. If you'd rather sit back and watch the scenery, you can join a day tour or the lodge can help arrange a private guide.

Cape Town and the Waterfront. A day in the city is energetic and fun, with street musicians, local food and plenty to see. When I visited, I sampled biltong and joined a Cape gin tasting at the V&A Food Market. That market has since closed, and the Time Out Market at the V&A Waterfront now fills a similar role for trying local food and drink in one place.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. If mountains, fynbos and wildlife are more your style, head south along the coastal cliffs through Table Mountain National Park for a day at the Cape of Good Hope.

Boulders Beach and Simon's Town. Across on the False Bay side of the peninsula, Simon's Town is home to Boulders Beach and its colony of African penguins, which began with just two breeding pairs in 1982. Seeing penguins this close on a public beach is a real treat, and on a warm day you can swim at the beaches next to the colony. The species is now critically endangered, so follow the rangers' guidance and stay on the boardwalks around the nesting areas.

Simon's Town is also home to Tintswalo's sister property, Tintswalo Boulders, a boutique villa right beside Boulders Beach and the penguins. It was on my list for my next Cape Town visit, and it's a lovely option if you'd like to split your stay between the Atlantic and False Bay sides of the peninsula.

Back at the lodge, I made it in time for another gin and tonic on the balcony and another sunset. With the ocean views, the fresh air and the waves crashing on the rocks below, it's easy to see why the staff love working here.

Best time to visit

Cape Town's summer (roughly November to March) brings long, dry, sunny days, though the south-easter wind can be strong. I stayed in November, at the start of summer. The lodge's high season runs from September to mid-December, with peak rates over the Christmas period. Winter (May to August) is the lodge's low season. It's wetter and cooler, but this is when the fireplaces and bath tubs come into their own, and you can often spot southern right whales from the deck from around July.

Who it suits

Tintswalo Atlantic suits couples, honeymooners and anyone wanting a quiet, scenic base close to Cape Town rather than a hotel in the middle of the action. It's a natural pairing with a safari, and a good choice for a small group or family celebration, as the whole lodge can be booked for exclusive use. As standard, the lodge doesn't accept children under 10, so it's not the right fit for families with young kids.

A few practical tips

  • Choose a water's edge Island Suite if you want to be right above the waves. The Mountain Suites are set higher and further back, but still look out over the ocean.

  • Book Chefs Warehouse early, especially for dinner in peak season.

  • Factor in the conservation levy. Because the lodge is inside the national park, a per-person conservation levy applies per stay.

  • Allow at least two nights. Weekend stays need a two-night minimum, and you'll want a full day to enjoy the lodge itself.

  • Check Chapman's Peak Drive conditions. The road occasionally closes for maintenance or bad weather, so check before you travel.
